Steve Grimes is a singer, songwriter, guitarist and guitarmaker from the island of Maui. His music is a stew of many different styles, reflecting his interest and experience in folk, blues, rhythm and blues, funk, jazz, and samba. Steve performs locally and beyond either as a solo acoustic singer/songwriter, or as a member of his five piece band “Ono Grimes”.
As a songwriter, he is accomplished in a range of styles, from soft ballads in the style of James Taylor, to funky originals in the style of The Neville Brothers. In 2011 he won a national songwriting contest for his song “Perfect Stranger”, and has placed honorable mention in other contests such as the New York Song Circle, and New Orleans Song Festival. His 2010 album entitled “Labor Of Love” was a finalist in the annual Na Hoku Awards.
Grimes’ recordings feature the stellar musicianship of Pat Simmons of the Doobie Brothers, Norton Buffalo of The Steve Miller Band, Jon Cleary and Hutch Hutchinson of Bonnie Raitt’s band, Jake Shimabukuro, Larry Coryell, and Rick Vito. Steve has released two albums of original songs since December 2016: The Ocean Road and Assorted Chocolates.
Steve is also a renowned luthier, having built instruments for George Benson, Steve Miller, Walter Becker, Willie Nelson, Larry Coryell, Pat Simmons, Leo Kottke, Jake Shimabukuro, and more. Many of these artists also appear on Steve's 3 CDs.
Steve will be performing at The Coffee Attic on April 21, 2018 with guitarist and longtime musical accomplice Steve Stusser of Seattle. Together they have done shows in Washington, California and Hawaii as “2ality” .
